Electric Mobility Promotion Scheme: The Indian government has unveiled a new scheme to promote the sale of electric two- and three-wheelers. The Heavy Industries Minister announced an allocation of Rs 500 crore for the EMPS scheme for 2024.

The EMPS Scheme launched on March 13 is aimed to promote e-mobility in the country. The government increased the funding under the Faster Adoption & Manufacturing of Electric Vehicles in India (FAME-II) program in February 2024 from Rs 10,000 crore to Rs 11,500 crore.

Electric two-, three–, and four-wheelers sold until March 31, 2024, or until funds are available, whichever comes first, would be eligible for these demand incentive subsidies.

Benefits of Electric Mobility Promotion Scheme

  • The new initiative reflects the government’s efforts to boost electric mobility and achieve zero targets.
  • About 400,000 e2W and e3W units will be supported with the Rs 500 crore allocated over four months.
  • In response to growing demand and to ease the financial pressure on electric car manufacturers, the government has reduced the maximum subsidy for e2W cars from Rs 22,500 to Rs 10,000 and e3W vehicles from Rs 111,505 to Rs 50,000. Both types of vehicles will be offered Rs 5,000 per kilowatt-hour (kWh) as an incentive.
  • For the EMP Plan 2024, the central government has allocated ₹500 crore.

  • The program will run for four months starting April 1st.
  • The special program aims to increase sales of electric rickshaws, two-wheelers and three-wheelers.
  • The government aims to subsidize about 3.3 million motorcycles. A financial subsidy of ₹10,000 will be provided for each two-wheeler under the scheme.
  • Under the scheme, the government intends to cover around 31,000 small three-wheelers (e-rickshaws and e-karts) and provide ₹25,000 to help with their purchase.
  • A financial assistance of ₹50,000 is being offered for the purchase of a large tricycle.
  • Under the Electric Mobility Promotion Scheme 2024, the incentive for electric two-wheelers has been reduced from ₹22,500 to ₹10,000.
  • It has been fixed at ₹50,000 for cars with larger batteries and ₹25,000 for e-rickshaws.

Eligibility Criteria for Electric Mobility Promotion Scheme

  • Only two-wheelers and three-wheelers are eligible for this scheme.
  • While the government offers incentives for both e2W and e3W classes, the new policy will not offer any such incentives for e4W and e-buses.
