The central government has extended the Digital Health Incentive Scheme (DHIS) for one year to digitize patient health records and link them to the Digital Health Account of Ayushman Bharat (ABHA ID). The scheme, which is now set to run until June 30, 2025, was launched on January 1, 2023.
The Center has asked states and union territories how they have utilized funds received under the scheme. Read below for detailed information on the Digital Health Incentive Scheme.
DHIS Scheme Objective
The purpose of the Digital Health Incentive Scheme (DHIS) is to promote public acceptance of the Ayushman Bharat Digital Mission (ABDM) and increase the uptake of digital healthcare services.
In addition to ABDM’s goal of offering digital health services to every citizen of the country, the organisation intends to utilise the Digital Health Incentive Scheme to promote and facilitate the adoption of these services by healthcare facilities, including clinics, diagnostic centres, hospitals, and labs.
The digital transactions made by healthcare facilities will serve as the basis for ABDM incentive calculations.
Healthcare Organisations Benefited from Digital Health Incentive Scheme
- Private hospitals include KIMS Hubbali Bangalore and KGMU Lucknow, as well as public hospitals like AIIMS Bhopal and KC General Hospital
- Digital solution providers, including Driefcase, Paytm, Bajaj Finserv, NIC and CDAC
- Diagnostic laboratories like Leo Clinical Lab Kannur and Indira Path Labs Delhi
Benefits of Digital Health Incentive Scheme
- Using digitization, the system provides evidence-based, high-quality care and accelerates access to medical records.
- It also contributes to robust health insurance coverage and robust digital health management in healthcare systems.
- It facilitates access to patients’ long-term medical records and reduces the workload associated with medical procedures such as patient registration, IPD referral, discharge, counseling and appointments
- Payment for all pharmacies and digital solutions in the overall cost of the digitization process
How would it affect medical facilities?
Hospitals that invest in digitizing their facilities can seek reimbursement through this program.
Hospitals’ transition to digital health is often discussed in terms of this cost. To migrate to the digital city, hospitals and clinics must equip laptops and PCs, connect to the Internet and acquire software (HMIS/LMIS).
Transitioning from physical to digital work also requires a change in attitude. The scheme is similar to a bonus to promote UPI.
How many digital health startups and hospitals have taken advantage of this offer?
4,005 healthcare facilities, including 1,085 private ones, and 41 DSCs, including 36 commercial businesses, have registered for the programme, as per the public dashboard. According to a senior National Health Authority official overseeing the DHIS, 584 healthcare facilities, 83 of which are private and 12 DSCs, ten of which are private companies have benefited from the programme.
