The origin of TamilNadu Agricultural University (TNAU) dates back to the establishment of an agricultural school at Saidapet in Madras, Tamil Nadu, in 1868. It was later shifted to Coimbatore and affiliated to Madras University in the 1920s.
TamilNadu Agricultural University assumed full responsibility for agricultural education and research and supported the national Department of Agriculture through the distribution of research materials. Until 1946, the Agricultural College and Research Institute at Coimbatore was the only agricultural educational institution in the whole of South India.
It was recognized in 1958 as a center for postgraduate studies offering both master’s and doctoral degrees. Agricultural College and Research Institute, Madurai was established in 1965. These two colleges formed the core of Tamil Nadu Agricultural University when it was established in 1971.
In 1972, separate degree programs were added to the B.S. (Horticulture) and B.E. (Agriculture). In 1979, a separate faculty of horticulture was established. In 1980, the B.Sc (Home Science) program was started in the Madurai campus.
The third Agricultural College was started at Killikulam in 1984 and the fourth at Kumulur (Trichy) in 1989. It was later shifted to Navalur Kuttappattu (Trichy) in 1992 renamed as Anbil Dharmalingam Agricultural College and Research Institute B.Sc.(1985) at Coimbatore and available. In line with technological changes, the BE (Agriculture) offered so far has been offered as B.Tech (Agricultural Technology) in the Agricultural Technical College and Research Institute, Kumulur, Trichy from the academic year 2002-2003.

Global technological advances have led to the introduction of new subjects. B.Tech.(Food Process Engineering), B.Tech.(Agricultural Biotechnology) and B.Tech.(Horticulture) from the academic year 1998-99 paved the way for introduction of B.Tech.(Horticulture) as an individual -support program from academic year 2002-2003 Bugatory freedom available.
TamilNadu Agricultural University In 2004, a new degree called B.Tech.(Energy and Environmental Engineering) was introduced and B.Tech. (Bioinformatics) in 2006. B.Tech (Agricultural Information Technology) and BS (Agricultural Management) were started in 2007.
